Gastroenterologist

Associate Professor Chamara Basnayake is a consultant gastroenterologist and endoscopist who investigates and manages the full spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders. His practice includes inflammatory bowel disease, bowel cancer screening, iron deficiency and anaemia, coeliac disease, reflux disease, swallowing disorders, disorders of gut–brain interaction, and diagnostic gastroscopy and colonoscopy. He consults at Focus Gastroenterology in East Melbourne and is a consultant gastroenterologist at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne.

He completed his medical degree at Monash University before undertaking physician and gastroenterology training at Monash Health and St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. He subsequently completed a PhD at the University of Melbourne and an advanced fellowship in oesophageal motility disorders at KU Leuven, Belgium. His PhD was awarded the TJ Martin Award for the best research project at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne.

Associate Professor Basnayake is Clinical Lead of the Oesophageal Physiology Laboratory and Co-founder of the Multidisciplinary Functional Gut Clinic at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne and maintains an active clinical research program in oesophageal disorders and disorders of gut–brain interaction. His research has been recognised internationally, including receiving the Ray Clouse Award from the Rome Foundation.

He performs gastroscopy and colonoscopy at Epworth Freemasons and Hobsons Bay Endoscopy, and admits private patients to St Vincent’s Private Hospital and Epworth Freemasons.
